March 3, 2018, 1 p.m. “The Friendship of Bodega y Quadra and Vancouver” Spanish Naval Captain Juan Francisco de la Bodega y Quadra and English navigator George Vancouver both sailed into Trinidad Bay, Bodega in 1775, and Vancouver in 1793.  The  Age of Exploration rivals formed a friendship when they sailed to Nootka, Vancouver Island in 1792 to sort out a territorial dispute.  Learn about their time in Trinidad, their Nootka Convention negotiations, and the aftermath of their bond when they met again in Monterey. TMS President Patti Fleschner presents for the HCHC at the HC Library, Eureka, free to all.

100 Year Anniversary of the 200 foot Wave – Join BLM and partners in a celebration of the much talked about giant wave that hit Pilot Rock and Trinidad Head in a massive storm over weeks in December 1914 and January 1915. Both Sides of the Bluff – Presentation by Jerry Rohde. Historian and author Jerry Rohde will present a program on his recent book, “Both Sides of the Bluff” on Friday, July 24 at 7 p.m. at the Trinidad Museum. His presentation, with wonderful old photographs, tells the story of what it was like to get food from Eureka to Arcata in the Eel River Valley and Humboldt Bay when Table Bluff was in the way using ferries, boats, roads and trains. Trinidad Lighthouse, 1871 – Present – The museum will host an opening for the new Trinidad Lighthouse exhibit in the Photography Room. The exhibit details the history of the lighthouse on Trinidad Head and features photographs from the collections of Humboldt State Uiversity, Humboldt County Historical Society, Trinidad Museum Society, and the U.S. Cost Guard.

Railroad! – Presentation by Jerry Rohde at Trinidad Town Hall. 2014 is the 100th year anniversary of the completion of the Northwestern Pacific Railroad. Come learn about the construction of NWP and see glimpses of striking scenery through which it passed. Rohde will also talk about other local lines, including the Annie and Mary; the Humboldt Northern and its successor, the Hammond Railroad; Heney’s ‘horsepower’ track, which went around Table Bluff; and the biggest bluff of them all, the never-built Humboldt and Eastern.

1964 Flood – Presentation by Jerry Rohde at Trinidad Town Hall. 2014 is the 50th anniversary of the massive 1964 flood, which rearranged much of the county and left imprints that remain to this day. It was so much bigger than the “hundred-year” 1955 flood that it was called the “thousand-year” flood, yet only 104 years earlier there had been another inundation that was probably about as big. Rohde will tell of three epic aqueous events in this year of California drought.

Gold Rush and Western Expansion Seminar – This seminar includes the story of seeking Trinidad Harbor, the Josiah Gregg party’s settling of the matter of the Trinity River draining into Trinidad Bay, and the push westward for profit, curiosity, adventure, science, and “manifest destiny.” Special attention to the writings of Josiah Gregg, L.K. Wood, Isaac Wistar, J. Goldsborough Bruff, and Christopher Brodbeck among other 1850s chroniclers. This is a three-part workshop series that will be held at the museum and is free to docents and Trinidad Museum Members, so try to attend as many as you can.

Trinidad Town Hall – Author and Historian Jerry Rohde will give a presentation on “High Lead”, covering early day logging in Humboldt County. Images and stories of loggers, mills and railroads from a century and more ago are all featured, along with rare movie footage from the 1930s showing death-defying “high climbers,” airborne logs as big as trucks and sky scraping stacks of lumber.

Jeff Jacobsen, who collects data on whales along the coastline and is aprincipal contributor of whale research to universities and organizations, will speak on “Local Whales and Beyond.” Jacobsen assisted Tom Sharp in preparing the current “Trinidad Whaling 1920-27” photo and natural history exhibit at the museum.
